Aspiring Leaders for Special Education

The Aspiring Leaders for Special Education programme is suitable for any qualified teachers or middle leaders in any phase of education, with experience in SEND and an interest in pursuing
special school leadership.

Our aim is to ‘identify emerging talents, coaching current and aspiring leaders in a climate where excellence is the standard, leading to clear succession planning’ (National Standards of Excellence for Headteachers).

Aspiring Leaders was created by Essex Special Schools Education Trust (ESSET), an organisation comprised of experienced leaders of special schools who understand the unique, challenging but highly rewarding nature of leading a special school. The programme is delivered by Vivien Rosier (SEN Consultant) and Jo Hodges (experienced special school Headteacher) supported by a serving special school Headteacher at each session

What’s Involved?

This cohort will commence study in January 2021. Participants are expected to attend 8 ‘virtual’ tutor workshops spread across four terms.
The programme is made up of four compulsory modules which address key leadership challenges for aspiring leaders:

  • Teaching & Learning
  • Data & Assessment
  • Leading, Managing & Supporting a Diverse Team
  • Partnerships & the Community

The themes underpinning the entire programme are the importance of emotional intelligence, responsiveness and flexibility in leadership.
The modules address key leadership challenges for aspiring leaders who have an interest in pursuing a career in special education and are designed and delivered by experienced special school Headteachers.
